I would suggest that your child should be assessed by a Speech Therapist at this time. There is a wide range of what we consider to be within the average range of typical language development. I feel that a Speech Therapist would be able to evaluate your child’s level of understanding, and assess his ability to socially interact and communicate his needs (verbal& non-verbal). A two year old child would generally have around 30 words but would understand alot more. Most children at this age can identify at least three body parts and be able to use social gestures e.g. wave bye bye. There are also different kinds of babbling and a Speech Therapist would be able to identify advanced vs early babbling stages. If you want to know more information about typical language development, I would suggest looking at the speech and language development section on this website. I hope I have answered your question but feel free to get back to me if you need more information. Thanks Frances.
